Excitement and uncertainty over the metaverse in new study
A survey conducted by KPMG of 767 business executives reveals a general belief in the impact of the metaverse on businesses and consumers but a lack of understanding and preparation. While 60% believe the metaverse will significantly impact their operations, only one-third feel adequately prepared. Though a majority plan to increase or maintain investments in the metaverse over the next 2-10 years, few are currently investing more than 5% of their tech budget. Nearly two-thirds anticipate conducting business meetings in the metaverse within the next decade, but a clear roadmap appears to be lacking.

Shanghai's city government has unveiled a strategic plan to enhance sectors utilizing blockchain technology, the metaverse, and its digital yuan or central bank digital currency (CBDC). Key targets include building blockchain-based platforms for commodity trading, creating a carbon accounting system to enhance the current carbon trading system, expanding metaverse applications beyond culture and tourism into legacy industries, and introducing blockchain courses at universities for specialized training. The city aims for a $7B gain from metaverse investments in tourism and has a 5-year plan to leverage these technologies for economic growth.
